2016 Youth Team Racing Regatta at Wroxham

Well done the WOBYC team of helmsmen Evan Clough, Edward Nourse and James Nourse and crews Thomas Betts, Gordon Royall and Max Stratford. Of the 4 teams, Norwich School and Norfolk Broads YC were the most experienced and it was no surprise that they were involved in the final races to decide the winner (with Norwich School just finishing on top) but WOBYC put up a good fight in all their races. Despite beating the UEA 3 races to 1 in the ’round robin’ part of the day, WOBYC and UEA had a final race to decide 3rd place overall and our guys sailed really well with some great team racing moves to take that win.

The clubhouse will be open by 9.30 am, the briefing will be at 10.15 and first start at 11.00. You can sail your boat round to the club and moor up to the pontoons before the briefing if you like.

Topper training Friday 30th October 2016

For those who have applied and paid to do the Topper training on Friday, the plan is for you to get your boats rigged before 10.00 am. That’s when you come over to the club to have some teaching in the clubhouse. Then you’ll get changed and go sailing. Please bring a packed lunch or some money. We’ll have the canteen open but we may need to send a runner to the chip shop or the Spar shop at lunch time!

WOBYC club Laser Radial

The old club Laser dinghy has been moved to the dead boats pile in the dinghy park but the good news is that David Gooch has pieced together a newer version which is now available to use. Just book it in the usual way on this website. The link is here. It has a radial rig (with the sail number 16 on the sail).

The aim is to provide our older/bigger juniors with the opportunity of sailing a Laser Radial so that they know whether it’s a class they can move up into. If you need help rigging the boat or need more information, contact Veronica Falat by email at sailing@wobyc.com or phone 01502 573570 or phone David Gooch on 07500 042994.

Junior sailing at WOBYC in October

WOBYC’s summer racing season comes to an end on the weekend of 24th-25th October. So the last Saturday of normal racing is on the 24th. On Sunday 25th there’s the End of Season Regatta which includes 3 races for Slow Handicap dinghies (e.g. Toppers, Teras, etc); after racing there’s a prize-giving and free buffet.

The following week is half term. It might be possible to organise some sailing during the week if the weather looks good. Please let Veronica Falat at sailing@wobyc.com know if you would be interested in this.

On Friday of half term (Oct 30th) there will be some Topper training with Topper class coach Anna Watkins. This will be suitable for juniors who are already racing. For full details of this, contact Veronica Falat. The cost is £15 per person for WOBYC Juniors (£25 for members of other clubs).

Then on Saturday 31st Oct there’s the Topper and Optimist Open Meeting at WOBYC. See below for the Notice of Race which gives lots of info about the day. If you want to book a Topper or Optimist, just book online at http://wobyc.com/club-boat-hire/

Then on Sunday 1st November it’s the start of the WOBYC winter programme which goes right through to the end of March next year with racing every Sunday morning.

Juniors in WOBYC’s Bart’s Bash Race on Sunday 20th September

Of the 21 boats racing in WOBYC’s Bart’s Bash Race, at least 5 had junior sailors in them. Ist junior was Oliver Hunt in his Topper (in 5th place overall), 2nd was Joe Drake helming his dad’s Broads One Design (7th overall) and 3rd was Joe Moncrieff helming his family’s Squib (8th overall and first Squib).

Junior Races at WOBYC on Saturday 19th September

Oliver Hunt was the winner of the ‘Open Fleet’ (experienced sailors) and so retained the Frithvale Shield for a second year. Thomas Betts was 2nd, just ahead of James and Edward Nourse. Meanwhile Oliver Jones in a club Topper and Max Stratford in a club RS Tera raced for the Colin Fuller Trophy for the ‘Regatta Fleet’ (new racers). Oliver was the winner and both are now ready to compete in club Slow Handicap racing so we hope to see them racing regularly.

Junior sailing on Friday 14th August

There’s a junior sailing day at the club on Friday 14th August. If you want to hire a club boat, please do that online. Meet in the dinghy park at about 10.30 am and then we can make a plan for the day.

All WOBYC juniors welcome!

Topper Worlds

Well done Joe Drake in finishing 9th overall in the Topper World Championships at Lake Garda in Italy. Arabella Sabberton also made it into the Gold Fleet, finishing 40th. Total entry 160 boats!

Tuesday evening sailing

The last of the Tuesday evening sailing sessions run by Richard Thomas of the Water Sports Centre will be on 21st July. If any other juniors, especially those already racing, would like to sail on that evening (to show how it should be done!) that would be fine. Are there any parents willing to have a go at getting the club barbecue fired up while the sailing is on? Can anyone supply some sausages or burgers and some bread rolls?

Well done Joe!

Well done Joe Drake on coming 4th out of 133 in the big Topper open meeting at RNSYC this weekend. Results here.

Saturday racing

Saturday afternoon racing is in full swing now. There are Slow Handicap races at 14.09 and 15.33.

Combining all the Saturday Slow Handicap races sailed up until May 23rd into one series gives us our first winner of the season. Congratulations Evan Clough! See the results here: Saturday Slow Handicap combined

The next series of combined races will run from 30th May to 15th August.

Congratulations Joe Drake – 2nd overall in Topper Inlands

Two WOBYC junior sailors competed in the Topper Inland Championships at Grafham Water on 2nd-3rd May. In a fleet of 152 boats Joe Drake finished 2nd and Arabella Sabberton  41st.

Team Racing

Well done the WOBYC junior team of Joe Drake & Thomas Betts, Bethany Hood & Edward Nourse and Evan Clough & James Nourse in the Broadland Youth Team Racing Regatta at Wroxham on Saturday 18th April. 4th overall in a really high quality competition.
